BELLINGHAM, Wash. – One of Bellingham’s tiny home villages is itself looking for a new home.

Unity Village has been in place at the site of the city’s Post Point Water Treatment Plant in Fairhaven for about three years.

It’s run by non-profit HomesNOW! and chairman Doug Gustafson says it has been a success.

“We have about a 48 percent rehousing rate at this point and it’s going up gradually as we get better and better. We think that’s pretty good,” said Gustafson. “I’m going to be really happy when it’s over 50 percent though.”

But an expansion of the water treatment plant is scheduled to begin in about a year.

Gustafson says that will displace the village, but the city has been supportive.

“We’re really hoping there will be a spot to move us to,” said Gustafson. “We’ve had reasonable reassurances that there will be a spot but we don’t know where that spot is yet.”

He says volunteers and residents have worked hard to keep the village running safely and efficiently.

HomesNOW! also operates Swift Haven tiny home village at the Civic Center ball fields.
